Checking a Gate Finish for Early Failure

What to look for
Run a hand along the bottom rail and feel for bubbles or rough spots under the paint. Look closely at every weld and at the hinge knuckles, where movement wears coatings away. Check the top of horizontal rails, where water sits after rain. Any orange staining running down from a joint means rust is already working underneath.
What to do about it
Small chips can be sanded, primed and touched up the same day. Bubbled areas need the loose coating scraped back to sound metal first, or the new paint will fail right along with the old. Keep a small can of matching topcoat on hand so repairs happen while they are still small.
