Gate Posts and Footings in Expansive Clay Soil
A gate is only as straight as the post it hangs from. In the expansive clay found across much of the Houston area, that post is under steady pressure, which is why this topic comes up so often at metal gates pearland atlas.
What the clay does
Expansive clay swells when it absorbs water and shrinks when it dries. Around a post, that movement pushes and pulls season after season. A shallow post works loose, leans toward the heavy side, and the gate latch stops lining up.
Depth and footing
Hinge posts for a driveway gate carry far more load than fence line posts. They need to go deeper and sit in a wider concrete footing so the weight of the leaf cannot lever them over. A footing that flares wider at the bottom resists being lifted by swelling soil better than a straight cylinder.
Drainage
Keeping water away from the footing helps as much as depth. Crown the top of the concrete so rain runs off, keep sprinklers aimed elsewhere, and make sure the grade slopes away from the post. A dry footing moves less.
